Ramon Aboitiz Musatadi, President of Sigdo Koppers, passed away

The prominent businessman led the development of the conglomerate since its foundation, 50 years ago. His funeral service will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, April 7th, at Cementerio Parque del Recuerdo after a Mass to be held at 12.00 at St. Francis of Sales Church (Address: Av. Santa Maria 5600, Vitacura).

On the morning of April 6th, at 79 years of age, the prominent businessman Ramon Aboitiz Musatadi passed away. He led the development of the Sigdo Koppers companies since its foundation, 50 years ago.

 

Ramon Aboitiz Musatadi, of Basque origin, arrived in Chile as a child and fathered six children. Upon arriving in Chile his family settled in Valparaiso where he completed his secondary education at the Padres Franceses School and later graduated as a Civil Chemical Engineer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso.

After completing his university studies he began working at Servicio de Cooperación Técnica, a subsidiary of CORFO, where he headedthe Industrial Engineering Programs in various companies. He was also professor of Business Administration at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the School of Engineering at the Catholic University of Chile and Professor of Industrial Organization at the School of Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso.

Fan of reading and travel, Ramon Aboitiz was known for being a man of great tenacity, hardworking and with anenormous entrepreneurial vision.

Of all of his accomplishments in business, he was most proud of Sigdo Koppers S.A. -one of the most important financial groups in Chile- leading its successful growth along with his partners Juan Eduardo Errázuriz Ossa, Naoshi Matsumoto Takahashi, Mario Santander García, Norman Hansen Rosés and Horacio Pavez García.

The history of Sigdo Koppers S.A. dates back to 1958 when a group of Chilean professionals created Ingenieros Asociados Sigma Donoso S.A. Two years later, in 1960, after merging with Koppers Co. Inc., of Pittsburgh, USA, the company Ingeniería y Construcción Sigdo Koppers S.A. was born, the foundation of Sigdo Koppers S.A.

In 1974, Ingeniería y Construcción Sigdo Koppers S.A. was acquired by its current controllers, headed by the then General Manager, Ramon Aboitiz. From that date, the company began to grow rapidly through the creation and acquisition of new companies. This allowed Sigdo Koppers to become a leading Chilean conglomerate in the industrial, services and commercial-automotive sectors, with relevant positions in its business areas and more than 50 subsidiaries and affiliates.

In recognition of its outstanding history, in 1992 Sigdo Koppers received the Icare Prize, the highest distinction awarded by Chilean business companies to leading institutions in the development and expansion of business management strategies, contributing to excellence in business and the progress of the country.

With long-term vision, in October 2005 the partners of Sigdo Koppers S.A.decided to put the company on the stock market through an initial public offering. It successfully placed 25% of its property and announced an investment plan of over US $ 500 million.

 

 

 

Currently, Sigdo Koppers participates in the service area through the companies Ingeniería y Construcción Sigdo Koppers S.A., Puerto Ventanas S.A. and Fepasa S.A. In the industrial area it is present through Enaex S.A., CTI Compañía Tecno Industrial S.A., Somela S.A., Sigdopack S.A. and Compañía de Hidrógeno del Bío Bío S.A. Also, it participates in the commercial and automotive areas through SK Comercial S.A. (SKC) and SKBergé S.A.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Most of these subsidiaries were led by Ramon Aboitiz, who until that moment was president of de Ingeniería y Construcción Sigdo Koppers S.A., CTI Compañía Tecno Industrial S.A., Somela S.A., Enaex, Sigdopack S.A., SK Comercial S.A., Puerto Ventanas S.A., and Ferrocarriles del Pacífico S.A.

 

 

 

In 2009 the conglomerate showed profits of US $ 68,731,000 and consolidated sales of US $ 1,440,159 million. This year marked the 50th anniversary of Ingeniería y Construcción Sigdo Koppers, the company that originated the conglomerate.

Previously, Ramon Aboitiz also served as director of Banco Santander Chile and director of Fundación Hogar de Cristo. He was also president of the Business Advisory Council MBA Ilades-Loyola College, advisor of Fundación Paz Ciudadana and Generación Empresarial; and an advisory board member of the Asociación de Empresarios de Origen Vasco.

Due to his successful career, Aboitiz received many awards during his lifetime. In 2005, he was honored by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce as "Universally Outstanding Businessman". Also, in 2007 he was awarded the status of "Life Member of the Chilean Engineers Association" and also the "Outstanding Engineering Career” Award from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, for his successful career and for being a reference of prestige and national recognition.

 

The funeral servicesof Ramón Aboitiz Musatadi was held on Wednesday, April 7th, at Parque del Recuerdo after a mass held at 12.00 in the San Francisco de Sales Church (Ave. Santa Maria 5600, Vitacura).
